Project: Almut

ALMUT, titled after her birth name, is a two-part visual ep, in which artist Aida Brandes tells the story of facing her own childhood, growing up amidst the chaos of alcoholism, manic depression and suicide, leaving her orphaned at an early age. As the past calls to be resolved, she finds herself unable to run from it any longer and is forced to confront it, which eventually opens the way for resolution and reveals an inner freedom that transcends her own story.

The music serves as a direct vehicle for the story. It starts off a dark, almost industrial and gritty mix of dubstep and hip hop. It is followed by a gospel like reconciliation and ends with an upbeat, soulful feel-good anthem.

Long time friend and director Kate Marks (HBO access) is able to translate the songs into a visual journey, that takes us deeper into the story and explodes with colors and images that amplify the music at every turn.

Set against the vibrant and exciting backdrop of New York City, this project is both a personal story, as well as an inspired exploration of the city they both call home.
